Description
Did you know that the largest open-cast bentonite mine in Europe is in Milos? Milos has a mining legacy of more than 2,500 years. Delve literally beneath the surface of this spectacular island on a journey to discover how all those dramatic colours and landscapes came about!
You’ll explore the geological wealth of Milos and trace its captivating mining history from antiquity to today. With the help of your destination angel, you’ll follow the geological trail of Milos in order to comprehend how it acquired its astonishing beauty.
Our journey will begin at the volcanic cave of Papafragas, one of the most impressive and photographed locations of Milos. Imagine an arched entrance to a cave, sparkling with crystal-clear waters. Did we mention that this cave is roofless? Papafragas is an absolute must-see and not only because it’s the island’s open-air geological exhibit.
We will continue on with the Milos Mining Museum, a perfect introduction to the character of the island, to equip you to better appreciate the geological marvels to follow on this comprehensive experience. Next, we’ll continue south, to the volcanic-rich region of Milos, with a stop at the old Salt Fields and thermal waters area (you may indulge in a quick dip of your feet, so be sure to bring your beach bag along!). Now we’ll head for the area of Kalamos, on the south coast of Milos, to visit the inactive volcano of Milos. No gaping crater waits to greet you: instead, you’ll find an incredible wealth of volcanic minerals, fumaroles and even age-old cedar trees for keen-eyed explorers to trace the presence of the volcano and its geothermal might.
Take a moment to appreciate the extraordinary view and energy of this site! Next stop is one of Milos’ crowning geological jewels - the old Sulphur Mines. Located in one of the most secluded and difficult to reach areas of the island, these mines played a starring role in the history of Milos, spawning an extensive community of miners and decades of operation. After their sudden abandonment, the site turned into a ghost town that leaves its mark on all who come to see the near post-apocalyptic landscape. After this memorable sight, we will refresh with some local delicacies at a small kafeneio (traditional café) in the old capital of Zephyria, before setting out to observe the modern face of mining life on Milos.
The road will take us north, to the active mining facility of Aggeria, passing through one of the biggest open-cast bentonite mines of Europe where you are sure to marvel at the spectacle of its stark inverse mountains. With this last stop, you will have a detailed grasp of not just the geology of Milos; but of the authentic character of the island and the terrain that has shaped the people and their culture over thousands of years.
