Description
With its hidden pirate caves, secluded bays and brilliant blue waters, Kleftiko is among the most photographed sights of Milos. Many embark on a boat tour to experience this dramatic spectacle of nature. However, only a few approaches it by land and see its remarkable beauty revealed step by step as they hike along the blinding white coastline. Here is a wonderful full day expedition where you will get to do both: enjoy the active adventure of a hike combined with the relaxation of admiring Kleftiko from the comfort of a boat.
For the many who Google “Milos” and fall under the spell of its most famous sight – the arch of Kleftiko – a sailing tour to see it for themselves is an unmissable experience. But only a lucky few know that this stunning natural phenomenon is not just accessible by sea; there is also a secret small hiking path that will lead you there on foot. Let our expert destination angel guide you on a peaceful hike deep into the more virgin terrain of Milos.
You will be collected from your hotel in a 4x4 car, the only vehicle able to access the west side of Milos, as you prepare to leave civilization behind. First though, a short visit to Sarakiniko, the beach known for its lunar landscape, with the impressive white rock formations that look like sand dunes from afar. We get there early, to avoid the obvious crowds that flock to this unforgettable location. After Sarakiniko, we head west and a stop to Empourios village, a tiny picturesque settlement that brushes the sea, with beautiful views over Adamas. We will visit the awe-inspiring monastery of St. John where you’ll hear legends about pirate raids from your destination angel and admire the glorious view. Now it’s time to lace up your walking shoes and begin your trek to the south-west of Milos: destination Kleftiko!
Witnessing Kleftiko by sea is one thing, but trust us; catching teasing glimpses of it through the trees and turns of the path until you finally reach those stark white cliffs and see it revealed in all its glory, takes it to a whole different level. There will be plenty of time to swim and snorkel in those amazing waters, cool off after the hike and surrender to the more relaxing part of the day, as you meet up with your private boat ride. There will be cave tours on a small tender, a lovely homemade lunch of local flavours and, most importantly, no worries about hiking back!
The rest of your day will be spent on board making new friends as you unwind with a drink or refreshment in your hand and set sail back to Adamas or Pollonia (depending on the weather); with another secluded swim stop or two along the way. You’ll be transferred back to your hotel from the disembarkation point with the feel of the salt from the sea still on your sun-warmed skin and the memories of this extraordinary day making a permanent path to your heart.
