Did you know that within just 45 minutes of downtown Athens, there’s an alpine playground where you can wander for hours on hidden trails amid a beautiful and reviving landscape of firs and pines? And where impressive ancient monuments, byzantine monasteries, traditional tastes (and the area’s famous red deer) are waiting to reveal themselves to you?
Parnitha’s National Park belongs to the network of protected areas Natura 2000. Found here are at least 1,000 of the 6,000 plant species of Greece, alongside an extremely rich array of fauna (the star of which is Greece’s largest herbivore mammal, the red deer).
The National Park of Mount Parnitha is Athens’ most popular alpine escape and one of the most fortified mountains of ancient Greece! On a full day active adventure, you’ll discover how the natural features and biodiversity of this magic mountain have ensured its cultural wealth.
In ancient times, Parnitha supplied important raw materials, such as fresh water and timber, to the broader region and was also a hub of culture and civilization. Nowadays, this lush mountain still has many highlights for you to discover: An ancient fortress overlooking the Attica landscape, a unique monastery built on the rocks with a splendid view of a canyon, and a path built atop an ancient aqueduct, to name a few.
Have you heard about the “Great Wall” of Attica? What role did Parnitha play in the holy procession to the legendary Oracle of Delphi (Pythida)? And how did refrigerators work in old Athens? Your destination angel for the day, an experienced scientist and guide, will enrich your experience with answers to these kinds of questions and offer colourful insights about the environmental and historic legacy of this special destination.
You will visit the "fortress of democracy", in the West of Parnitha, where General Thrasyvoulos consolidated democracy in 404 BC (get your camera ready for the epic view across the Athenian plain!). Next up is the Monastery of "Κleiston”, clinging to the edge of gorgeous “Giannoula” Gorge. Discover the remarkable trick the resident nuns used to carry the candle across the monastery and through the canyon to the cave of Faneromeni.
Now let’s hike on a section of wooded trail built on the ancient aqueduct that once transferred spring water from the Keladan River, supplying the city of Eleusis. If we are lucky, we may meet the most beautiful resident of Parnitha ... the red deer! Finally, we will refuel with a traditional Greek meal at one of Parnitha’s well known tavernas before stopping in briefly at the Ancient wall of Dema.
