Hello Spring
Spring’s start is according to the calendar on March 1st, the official beginning of spring season is through March, 20th. In spring, destinations come to life again! Flowers, sunshine and outdoor activities characterize the landscape. Some destinations blossom during spring time more than others! One of them is the majestic island of Chios!
The flora of Chios
The flora of the island differs from one place to another. The northern part of the island is dominated by mountains and rocky soils, with forests of pines, cypresses, plane trees and aromatic plants such as oregano, thyme and sage. This part of the island is also dominated by the schinos, an evergreen shrub from which the famous Chios masticha comes out. In the centre of the island - in the city of Chios or otherwise in Chora for the locals - one admires the area of Kampos with rich waters and fertile soil, where citrus fruits are grown. Kampos has been designated a "historic site" and a "traditional settlement" by the Greek Ministry of Culture.
The famous Chios orchids
Of the 250 orchid species that exist in Europe, 92 grow in the spring in Chios! The island of Chios is famous for its flora and wild flowers, as in addition to its enchanting wild tulips, it has to boast of its wide variety of orchids that are scattered on the island.

Lalades
Do you know the local name of Chios tulips? It is Lalades! This name originates from the word Lale, a Persian name for the tulip, which passed through the Turks in the Chios dialect. These are four species of tulip (tulip aegenensis, tulip udulatifolia, tulip clousiana, tulip praecox), three of which grow exclusively in Chios and mainly in the central and southeaster part of the island. The setting composed by these delicate and elegant flowers is marvellous, like a red natural carpet, which has inspired poets, photographers, painters and cinematographers for years.
Spring in Chios
Chios is an island, which cannot stop sharing its natural beauty! It is hard to find a period not worth visiting Chios. Its famous masticha, the medieval villages, beaches and its wild beauty are many among other things someone should explore in Chios. Chios is one of the North Aegean hidden gems! Don’t miss the chance to visit Chios in every season. If you are a nature lover, don’t miss the chance to admire the majestic Chios tulips, its spring jewel!
