A park for nature lovers
Do you love nature? Walking and hiking trails? Wild Animals? Orchard gardens? If you’ve answered yes to all of the above, then you definitely have to visit Wildpark Roggenhausen in Aarau, the capital of the Swiss canton Aargau. This 15-hectare wildlife park is located west of the city of Aarau, just 49km from downtown Zurich, and is the perfect day out for nature lovers of all ages, whether you are living in Zurich, or just visiting for a few days. It’s an ideal place for families too. Children will adore the rich variety of species on show, as well as the fun-filled playground, which is next to the restaurant. The park is always open and there is no entrance fee.
The fauna
After walking for a few minutes through the park, you will start observing several animals; some of them will be really close to you, others might prefer to keep their distance. There are also animals outside of enclosures, which depending on the season, you can observe moving about freely. You’ll be able to feed some of the animals at the automatic feeders with special food purchased in the park (you can’t bring in your own food). For the moment, unfortunately, because of the current Covid -19 measures, feeding the animals directly is not allowed. There are many different kinds of animals to observe, such as Alpine marmots, rabbits, black-nosed sheep, mountain ponies, guinea pigs, fallow deer, wild turkeys and many more. Having said that, I do have my favourites!

Fallow deers
The first animals you’re likely to come across are the fallow deer; there are plenty of them. I love the way they suddenly run all together in the same direction from time to time, like a flash mob! The scenery is just amazing at Roggenhausen – it’s hard to believe that such a park exists, so close to the city of Aarau.

Peacocks
My favourite animal and the most impressive one to behold is the peacock. There are quite a few of them walking around; so watch out for the showoffs among them, strutting about with their plumage open, displaying their mesmerizing colors. They are so beautiful! I could watch them for hours.
Guinea pigs
Okay, so the guinea pigs are a little bit “smelly”, but they’re so damn cute, you’ll forgive them! Children adore them too and can’t get enough of them!

Black nosed sheep
Black nosed sheep amaze me. They look just like the little teddy bears we used to play with as infants. When you see them here in their valley, amid such beautiful surroundings, it feels like they might have just wandered out from the pages of a fairy-tale

Rams
Next stop, the rams. Sometimes, it’s as if they are just like human beings! I saw three of them, all trying to climb up to a little rock at the same time when, clearly, there was not enough space for all three. They behaved exactly like little children; all wanting to be the one up on top of the rock.
Wild turkeys
Observing the wild turkeys in action is like watching a Famous Grouse whisky commercial! They are so vivid and they make such funny sounds!

The flora
Besides the captivating fauna, the wild park is also very rich in flora. On the hillside, you’ll find several, different kind of fruit plantations such as cherries, pear, apples - even palm trees.

Endless green
There are so many different vibrant shades of green in this park. You can hike for hours and never get bored. By the end of the fauna area, there are several lovely nature trails for hiking for you to choose from. If you are tired, or you just want a short walk, you can amble around for several minutes and then come back. If you love hiking in nature, however, you can walk for nearly four hours, enveloped by beautiful nature! During your hiking trail, you will have the opportunity to see several interesting rocks and read about their history and formation.
If you are a nature lover, you will really enjoy exploring this amazing wildlife park.
Last stop the historical city of Aarau
Photogenic Aarau with its historic old quarter is just 4 short kilometres away from the Roggenhausen park. It is well worth strolling around the attractive little streets of the old district and ticking this charming medieval city off your bucket list!
