Experience Seekers
Even if you are only in Athens for a short time, it's well worth spending two days in Spetses. This classy, pine-clad island is considered the perfect Greek island getaway!

Saronic Gulf islands
Spetses is one of the four inhabited Greek islands in the Saronic Gulf: the others are Hydra, Poros and Aegina. My favourites of the foursome are Spetses and Hydra. Both share an untypical characteristic: cars are not allowed (although in Spetses, permanent residents can drive their vehicles in restricted areas at specific times of day). All four Saronic islands are very close to Athens with distances between 18 nautical miles (Aegina) and up to 48 nautical miles (Spetses) from Piraeus (the main port of Athens). This makes them an ideal, very popular destination for both city-weary Athenians and foreigners, even for a day trip.
The perfect short break get away
By taking the fast catamaran (speed boat), you can reach Spetses in just two hours (some routes can take up to 2hrs and 45 min). Just imagine, you can set off from Athens in the morning, and be enjoying fresh fish on elegant old Harbour in time for lunch! You can also reach all these stunning Saronic islands by car (except for Aegina): Stay tuned to read more in our “Take the road trip to Spetses” story. Even if you’re only planning to visit Athens for a few days, it really is worth putting aside an extra two days to discover one of these islands. Athenians consider them the perfect Greek island getaways!

Reasons Spetses is a classy island #1
I found it really hard to decide on the best title for this story: there are so many wonderful descriptions about Spetses, but in the end, I considered “A classy island called Spetses” as the most appropriate. Let me explain why: “Classy” because of its pivotal and courageous role during the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman Empire. The flag of Greek revolution was first raised in Spetses back in 1821. Classy too, because of the arresting neo-classical house and statue dedicated to the Greek female revolutionary heroine, Bouboulina; because of the captivating Spetses Museum; and the historic distinct of Kounoupitsa; because of the island’s proud maritime tradition under the Venetians; because of landmark Anargyreios School (immortalised by John Fowles in his novel The Magus), and its spectacular sunsets and old-world glamour; because of the stately old mansion houses – and last but not least, because of the well-groomed grandmothers sitting n the painted doorways of their pretty white-washed cottages.

#2
A “Classy island called Spetses!”: Because of its sophisticated restaurants and cobbled-stone harbour lined with Victorian lamp posts and horse-drawn buggies, of the lovely narrow lanes framed with bright bougainvillea blooms. Classy because of the one and only architectural delight, The Poseidonion Grand Hotel (that has hosted everyone from Ingrid Bergman to Elizabeth Taylor), the Bouboulina’s square, the picture perfect Aghios Mamas church, the romantic route connecting the new harbour with the old, and the traditional boats built by local craftsmen that conjure such nostalgia.

#3
A “Classy island called Spetses” because of its flag and its slim lanes lined with Instagram-worthy pebble mosaics; its exciting Armata celebrations every September (where fireworks rain over a model Ottoman vessel set alight at sea); of its classic cars rally, and annual mini marathon, Spetsathlon, that draws competitors from around the world; and because of its spiritually exhilarating Greek Orthodox Easter celebrations. Small and exclusive, Spetses is a classy island that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime!

When to visit Spetses
Spetses is great to visit almost all year round. As expected, you will find many Greeks during August, Orthodox Easter and the summer weekends, because many have summer houses here. The ideal timing for visiting Spetses is during the second half of September, when the weather is still perfect (temperature wise it feels almost like summer) and you’ll find it much less rammed. Spetses is a destination which travellers can visit from early March until mid November: the scenery might change during the seasons but the class, elegance and beauty of the island remain always the same.
