Description
Kampos is one of the true treasures of Chios. This rare residential settlement was once home to the island’s aristocratic clans and you’ll struggle to find anything else like it across the Aegean. A breathtaking fertile landscape blends harmoniously with distinctive local architecture: stately Genoese residences with tall red-stone walls, pebbled patterned courtyards and decorative wells emerge amid aromatic citrus orchards - echoes of the island’s poetic past and noble ancestry dating back to the 16th and 17th century.
There are 50 post-Byzantine churches and 64 mansions listed by the Ministry of Culture-in this stunning natural area.
Let’s set off on a half-day walking tour of the Kampos area, which is actually an extension of Chios Town to the south. Accompanied by your destination angel, you’ll first admire two characteristic churches of Kampos - Agios Trifonas Agelaston and St. Ioannis Fakas - both with wonderfully well-preserved morphological and architectural elements. After a 10 minute walk along a scenic trail, few fail to be charmed by St. Ioannis Fakas – an enchantingly adorned chapel tucked into the pines in a beautiful setting with magical views.
Our walk will continue past impressive villas and townhouses, once homes to the Genoese and Greek gentry, erected in the middle of well-watered grounds. Built predominantly with rich ochre and russet stones from the neighbouring village of Thymiana, the villas of Kampos boast vast gardens and cisterns adorned with white marble columns and reliefs. Characteristic too are the large mangano - water wheels – once powered by mules.
Next, it’s time for a short break at the Citrus Memories Space to take in its modest museum dedicated to all things Kampos. We’ll sample a. selection of the traditional citrus preserves produced here (along with a reviving coffee or refreshment). Continuing our walk, we’re headed for one of Kampos’ most splendid mansions: the famous “Argentiko”, which operates nowadays as a luxury hotel. Argentiko is one of the area’s oldest estates, and an exquisite example of the Genoese grandeur of Kampos. Allow your destination angel to reveal colourful stories about this architectural masterpiece.
Finally, we will visit a “Mastelo” cheese workshop for the rare pleasure of trying this addictive local cheese at its place of production. Of Venetian origin, Mastelo is made from full fat goat’s milk and is Greece’s answer to mozzarella - perfect in pizzas and pies or as a stuffing for meats and vegetables. As we reach the end of our experience, we guarantee you will leave fulfilled by the flavours, scents and sights of this extraordinary location and your satisfying immersion in the cultural life of Kampos.
