Description
When approaching Corfu by ferry from the mainland, the first thing to snag all eyes is the Old Fortress. This masterpiece of architectural art offers an incredible first impression of this beloved Ionian island. Your destination angel for the day will share fascinating stories about this Corfiot emblem and its cultural highlights, such as the British-built chapel of Saint George, the stately Public Library, the British military hospital and the Music Department of the Ionian University (find out which of these local landmarks is rumoured to be haunted!).
Did you know that the Museum of the Corfu Philharmonic Society honours the composer of the Greek national anthem? Whenever you visit Corfu, there is a chance you’ll encounter one of the many Corfiot brass bands marching through the Old Town in a local celebration. As part of your visit to the museum, you will have the chance to meet and chat with one of the musicians of the Philharmonic Society.
Next, we will introduce you to the hidden gems and colourful legends of Corfu’s Old Town. Learn the special local name for those distinctive slim passages. Your destination angel will walk you through all the most important sites such as the Saint Spyridon Church, Kremastis Square, Mpizi’s Kantouni, while sharing historical accounts about the dark side of Corfu Town during the Medieval and Venetian eras. What were the notorious Sagrado and why were they so feared by the locals?
Next, we will strike a sweet note by sampling a traditional Greek dessert, “Galaktompoureko”, at renowned dairy shop, Periklis Alexis, which once dispatched their delicious products by plane every fortnight to Jackie Kennedy. Your cultural odyssey will conclude with a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Corfu where you will browse ancient relics unearthed from several excavated sites across Corfu, dating from Prehistoric to Hellenistic times. Lay your eyes on the arresting Gorgona-Medusa pediment from the temple of Artemis, dating from 585 BC, as your destination angel brings to life this and other riveting tales from the museum.
